Tone Caliper Scout — Privacy Policy
Last updated October 5, 2026
Tone Caliper Scout (“Scout”) is developed by Light Year Interactive Inc.. This policy covers the Scout app for Windows and macOS. The website, purchases and your rights over your data are covered by our general Privacy Policy, which also applies wherever this page does not say otherwise.
Scout works on your computer. It does not upload your photographs, it has no account, and it collects no usage analytics.
Your photographs
Scout reads the photographs you open from your own folders and shows what it finds: camera settings, color and light, focus points, the place a photograph was taken. All of it is worked out on your computer. Place names come from a database inside the app, not from an online lookup.
Scout does not upload your photographs, their previews, their metadata, their file names or their locations to servers operated by Light Year Interactive Inc. or anyone else. Your photographs are not used for advertising, analytics, machine learning or AI training.
Ratings, flags and labels
The ratings, flags and color labels you give are kept in a file on your computer and written to XMP sidecar files beside your photographs. If you turn those options on, they are also passed to Adobe Lightroom Classic through the Scout plug-in, or to the Tone Caliper desktop app, on the same computer. None of this goes over the network.
What Scout sends
Scout contacts a server in three cases, and only these:
- The free trial. To start the trial, Scout sends our licensing service a non-reversible (hashed) identifier derived from your computer, the product name, and whether the computer runs Windows or macOS. The service records when that trial began, so the trial cannot simply be reset. The identifier cannot be turned back into anything that names you or your computer.
- A paid license. When you activate a license, Scout sends your license key and a short label derived from the same hashed identifier to Polar, the company that sells the license on our behalf, so the key can be counted against its 2-computer limit. It checks the license again about once every thirty days. If a check cannot be made, Scout keeps working.
- Updates. About once a week, and when you choose Check for updates, Scout asks this website for the newest version number. The request carries the Scout version you have and whether you are on Windows or macOS, and nothing that identifies you or your photographs.
As with any internet request, the servers that answer these see the network address the request came from. We do not use it to identify you.
Accounts, analytics and tracking
Scout does not ask you to create an account. It contains no advertising or analytics software and sends no information about how you use it. We do not track you across apps or websites.
Scout keeps a log file on your computer to help diagnose problems. It can contain file paths and error messages. It stays on your computer unless you choose to send it to us.
Purchases
Purchases are processed by Polar (Polar Software Inc.), acting as Merchant of Record. Polar collects your payment details and email address to complete the sale and deliver your license key; we do not receive or store your full payment-card details. See Polar’s privacy policy and the Payments section of our Privacy Policy.
Service providers
The licensing service that records trials runs on Supabase. License keys are issued and checked by Polar. This website, which answers the update check and serves the installers, is hosted on Vercel; the installers themselves are downloaded from GitHub.
Keeping and deleting data
Trial and licensing records are kept for the life of your license and as needed for support, fraud prevention and legal record-keeping. To ask what we hold or to have it deleted, see “Your rights and how to exercise them” in our Privacy Policy or write to contact@tonecaliper.com.
Uninstalling Scout removes the app. Your settings, your ratings file and your sidecar files stay on your computer until you delete them.
Children
Scout is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect their information.
Changes to this policy
If Scout’s features or data practices change, this page will be updated. The date at the top says when it last was.
