Common aspect ratios, and where they're used
An aspect ratio is the shape of the frame — width against height. Cameras, platforms, and print sizes each settled on different shapes, which is why a photo almost never moves between them uncut.

How much of a photo does a crop lose?
Compare the two shapes. The share you keep is the smaller ratio divided by the larger one; everything else is trimmed from the long sides. Two examples with a standard 3:2 camera file:
- Portrait 2:3 → Instagram 4:5 — you keep about 83%. A modest trim from top and bottom; most compositions survive it.
- Landscape 3:2 → Instagram 4:5 — you keep barely 53%. Nearly half the frame goes, which is why landscape photos so often feel butchered on Instagram. Shooting (or cropping) with the target shape in mind is the only real fix — and previewing the loss first is what this tool is for.

Standard print sizes span several shapes, and none of the popular "middle" sizes match a 3:2 camera file — the trim below is what the lab will take if you don't choose the crop yourself.

Frequently asked questions
What aspect ratios does Instagram use?
Feed posts can be square (1:1, 1080×1080), portrait up to 4:5 (1080×1350), or landscape up to 1.91:1. Stories and Reels are 9:16 (1080×1920). Portrait 4:5 takes up the most screen space in the feed, which is why it's the most common crop.
Why does an 8×10 print crop my photo?
Most cameras shoot 3:2, but an 8×10 print is 5:4 — a noticeably squarer shape. Printing a 3:2 file at 8×10 trims about 17% of the frame. Sizes that match the sensor, like 4×6 or 20×30, keep everything.
Does cropping reduce image quality?
Cropping removes pixels but doesn't degrade the ones that remain. What matters is how many pixels are left for your output: a 24-megapixel photo cropped to 4:5 still has far more than an 8×10 print or an Instagram upload needs. This tool exports at the crop's full remaining resolution.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?

How do I crop without losing the important part?
