Export your look as a LUT

A 3D LUT stores a mapping from input colors to output colors. It transfers the combined look, without the individual editing controls.

Export a LUT

1. Right-click a photo in the Library or Editor and choose Export LUT….

2. Choose a destination in the save dialog.

Tone Caliper exports a 65-point 3D .cube LUT, named after the photo.

For video clips, you can also export several LUTs at once from Export, at 33 or 65 points. See Grade a video clip.

From the Library, the LUT uses the photo's saved edit. From the Editor, it uses the current adjustments, including changes that have not yet been saved.

What the LUT includes

The LUT includes tone adjustments, whole-image color pins, saturation adjustments, and any imported LUT.

Black-and-white grades are also supported. The LUT includes the B&W conversion, including the film look and B&W EQ adjustments.

Masked pins and film grain are excluded. A LUT maps colors without storing image positions or texture. Tone Caliper notifies you when these adjustments are left out.

Use the LUT with SDR footage

Tone Caliper's LUTs expect Rec.709 or sRGB input and produce output in the same range. Values outside that range are clamped.

Clips you graded in Tone Caliper are already Rec.709, so apply their LUTs directly.

For log or camera-RAW footage, convert the image to the expected SDR color space before applying the LUT. The exported LUT is a creative look, not a log conversion or HDR output transform.

DaVinci Resolve

Import the .cube file into Resolve's LUT library and apply it to a node.

If the footage needs a log-to-Rec.709 conversion, place the LUT after that conversion in your processing chain.

Premiere Pro

In Lumetri Color, open Creative → Look → Browse and select the .cube file.

Make sure the footage is converted to the expected SDR color space before the look is applied.

Grade a still from your footage

Tone Caliper opens H.264 and HEVC clips directly. See Grade a video clip. For log, HDR, or other footage it can't open, grade a still frame instead:

1. Export a still frame after converting the footage to Rec.709.

2. Grade the still in Tone Caliper.

3. Export the grade as a LUT.

4. Apply it to the footage after the same conversion.

Check the result across several shots and adjust individual clips as needed.

Export a recipe as a LUT

In the Recipes rail, open a recipe's menu or right-click it, then choose Export LUT….

This exports the saved recipe's settings, not the current photo's edit. The file is named after the recipe.

Choose a recipe or a LUT

Use a recipe to share editable settings with another Tone Caliper user.

Use a LUT to transfer the combined color transformation to software that supports .cube files. You can save the same look in both formats.
